Welcome to Key Renewables

Key Renewables helps households access free or subsidised home energy upgrades through the government-backed Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme. This nationwide programme is designed to reduce carbon emissions and support families at risk of fuel poverty by improving home energy efficiency.

We work with homeowners and private tenants across the UK — with our base here in the North East — to help them secure ECO funding for essential upgrades like insulation, heating systems, and renewable energy measures. Our friendly team will guide you through the entire process, from checking if you qualify to completing the installation.

As certified installers of a wide range of energy-saving measures, we can help improve your home’s efficiency and lower your energy bills. Common upgrades available through ECO funding include:

Heat Pumps

Solar Panels

Modern Storage Heaters

First-Time Central Heating

Boiler Upgrades & Replacements

Loft and Cavity Wall Insulation

Room-in-Roof Insulation

    Frequently asked questions

Is there a catch? How can this really be free?

If you meet the qualifying criteria, you won’t pay a penny towards the cost of the work — including parts and labour. Funding is provided through the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, which aims to cut carbon emissions and help households reduce their energy bills. If you don’t fully qualify, we’ll let you know before any work begins. In many cases, you may still be entitled to a large contribution, leaving you to pay only a small amount towards the improvements.

Where does the funding come from?

Funding is supplied by major energy companies like British Gas, EDF, and NPower. The government sets them targets to lower carbon emissions, and they meet these by funding energy efficiency upgrades for homes. Approved installers complete the work, and then claim the costs back from the energy companies under the ECO scheme.

I’ve tried schemes like this before and didn’t qualify

This is a new scheme (ECO4), launched on 1st April 2022. The eligibility rules have changed to include more households, so even if you weren’t eligible before, there’s a good chance you might be now. With the potential for significant free upgrades to your home, it’s well worth applying — our simple questionnaire takes less than a minute.

How long does the work take?

Most home energy improvements can be completed in a day. Cavity wall insulation typically takes 2–3 hours, loft insulation around an hour, while boiler replacements and room-in-roof insulation usually take a full day. We’ll always let you know how long any work is expected to take before we start.

I’m not confident using web forms or doing paperwork

No problem — our online eligibility checker is quick and straightforward, and takes just a few minutes. If you’d prefer, you can call us on TBC and we’ll help you over the phone. A qualified surveyor can also visit your home to carry out a free, no-obligation assessment and help complete the necessary paperwork. We’ll then manage the application process for you.

How long will I wait from applying to having the work done?

This can vary depending on where you live and the time of year, but we usually aim to have work completed within 2–4 weeks of your initial enquiry.

I don’t own my home — can I still qualify?

Yes — the person responsible for paying the fuel bills can apply for ECO funding. Private tenants may be eligible depending on their circumstances. We will need written permission from your landlord before any work begins, but we’re happy to help arrange this for you.

Who carries out the work, and can I trust them?

We work with a trusted network of fully accredited, qualified installers to complete your energy-saving improvements. All work is guaranteed, fully compliant with safety standards, and carried out with care and consideration for your home.

Which areas do you cover — are you installing in my town?

Although based in the North East, Key Renewables operates nationwide. We’ve carried out installations in towns and cities across the UK, including Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Hull, Grimsby, Cardiff, Birmingham, Ipswich, Bristol, Dundee and many more. No matter where you live, get in touch to check if we’re currently installing in your area.

    Is my personal information safe?

We only ask for your first name, address, and a contact number or email so we can get in touch within 48 hours. We’ll also need a few details about your property to check eligibility. We will never sell or share your personal information with anyone — ever. You can view our full Privacy Policy here.
